Spring is undoubtedly the quietest of all the seasons. It comes in very shyly – snowdrops creep up on barren yards, early mornings don’t have that “cool blue filter” look, and the branches that were once bare are now filled with tiny, delightful blooms. Once you actually notice this sight, you know one thing’s for sure – spring has arrived in full swing!

However, what I especially love about the season is the sense of renewal. By some sort of happenstance, we’re inspired to push the reset button, be with personal habits, living spaces, or anything that has been left to “collect dust”.

With that in mind, one of my favorite ways to embrace spring is through the lens of Ostara, the spring equinox festival focused on balance and new beginnings. This festival allows me to be fully present this time of year, laying out the ideal groundwork for mindful living.

If you’re looking for ways to embrace spring through mindfulness and renewal, here’s how to celebrate Ostara in the modern-day world.

What It Means To Embrace Spring

For many, embracing spring means enjoying the good weather and spending more time outside. However, this season goes beyond just that. In winter, we’re naturally drawn to rest and reflection. This is the time when we map out our plans and resolutions, thinking about all the aspects where we can grow. In spring, these plans turn into action.

Still, don’t feel compelled to make rapid transformations. In fact, spring renewal is the direct opposite of that! Remember that this season likes to take things slow. Take tree branches, for example – you don’t see them instantly go from bare to lush green. On the contrary, the buds must form before they flower, and only then do they turn into full-grown leaves. The same goes for you – let your growth be gradual, not instantaneous.

This type of mindset also applies to the Ostara perspective. The spring equinox brings equal day and night, symbolizing harmony between opposites: rest and action, planning and doing, inner work and outer movement. To celebrate Ostara today is to check in with your own balance and gently adjust.

5 Ways To Embrace Spring

1. Be Mindful Of Your Time Outdoors

Once the weather starts getting warmer and the sun creeps up from the winter clouds, all of us are compelled to head to the great outdoors. While spending time outdoors is never in vain, be mindful of what nature offers you rather than just “being just there”.

Firstly, there’s no need to rush. Let your senses take over and notice how nature is blooming all around you. Pay attention to the new leaves, the vibrant colors, and the birds singing in the distance. This kind of awareness slows down your nervous system, allowing the body to relax and let go of pent-up stress.

If you’re headed out in nature with your family, this is a perfect chance to celebrate Ostara. Let your kids roam around to discover the signs of spring. Once they notice something of interest, teach them about it with a hands-on approach. This way, a lesson morphs into discovery, something kids are more likely to pick up on.

2. Celebrate Ostara With Simple Rituals

Speaking of celebrating Ostara, one of the simplest ways to embrace spring is by doing symbolic rituals.

You don’t need a full-blown ceremony in order to celebrate. This can be as simple as lighting a candle at sunrise or sunset, or creating a small nature display in your home from things that you’ve found during your walks. If you want the experience to be interactive for the kids, you can always decorate eggs with symbols of renewal and new life.

3. Refresh Your Living Spaces

Slowly, but surely, the time will come knocking for the annual spring cleaning. Let’s face it – this is not everyone’s favorite, and most of us see it as an obligation.

But, allow me to let you in on a little secret – the reason it feels this way is that we believe we have to do everything all at once!

You don’t need to overhaul your entire home in one run. Instead, pick one space at a time, even as little as your workstation. As you’re doing the cleanup, separate everything into two groups – things that support your growth, and those that are weighing you down.

By doing this kind of “filtering”, you won’t believe the powerful changes that will come your way!

4. Do A Personal Audit

Spring renewal applies to all aspects of your life, even your mindfulness. With that in mind, this is the ideal time to put those reflections into action.

The best way to do a “personal audit” is by taking time to journal on your personal balance. Take notice of where your energy is going and where you feel stagnant. See if you’re ready to make new beginnings, and whether there are areas in your life that need a little bit of decluttering. Think of this as a way to turn the mirror to yourself and take a deep look inwards.

Of course, you shouldn’t disregard practical areas such as your work or outdoor time. Creating this balance early on paves the way for smoother momentum as you go deeper into the season.

5. Plant Something

Looking for a low-effort way to embrace spring? It’s simple – just plant something!

We all know that if you put love into something, it will grow and thrive. The best example of this is plants. Planting reinforces patience and care. It turns intention into action. It also mirrors Ostara symbolism – seeds represent potential, beginnings, and future nourishment.

Spring Into Action

Again, embracing spring doesn’t demand that you transform your life in one day. It’s a transitional process that asks you to take notice of what’s ready to grow and take small steps towards it.

If you’d like deeper structure and inspiration for how to celebrate Ostara and work with the season more intentionally, guided Ostara resources can make the process easier and more meaningful.
